Alfred Ernst was born in 1904. He studied graphic design and photography, 1922-27 at the Graphische Lehr-und Versuch-sanstalt, Vienna, as a pupil of Koppitz. He joined him as assistant in 1930, taking over direction of the studio in 1937. He worked independently as a photographer in a romantic pictorialist style.
