A young officer, in blue coat with silver-bordered red facings and silver epaulette, frilled cravat and white shirt, powdered wig; together with a lady, in white dress with floral garland draped over her décolleté, white flowers and foliage, pearls and falling gauze veil in her upswept and curled hair
the former signed and dated 'Rocher 1776' (lower left)
ovals, 1 5/16 in. (34 mm.) high, set either side of a Louis XVI ivory carnet-de-bal, the gold mounts struck with the date-letter 'M' for 1775/1776, the charge and discharge marks of Jean-Baptiste Fouache 1774-1780, maker's mark partly rubbed but probably 'EB', with gold-rivetted four-leaved tablets inside (2)
