Item Overview

Description

An Italianate landscape with a walled palace
oil on panel
6 1/2 x 9 5/8 in. (16.5 x 24.5 cm.)

Notes

This landscape is related to another painting by Dunouy formerly in the collection of Lucien Bonaparte, Prince of Canino, entitled Diocletian refusing the Empire, (present location unknown). That painting, known only from an engraving by Parboni dated 1812, shows the same view as the present picture but with Diocletian and two other figures in the foreground (see B. Ederlein-Badie, La collection de tableaux de Lucien Bonaparte, Prince de Canino, Paris, 1997, p. 182).

We are grateful to Madame Policarpe-Chorrier for having confirmed the attribution to Alexandre-Hyacinthe Dunoy on basis of photographs.

No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
