Item Overview

Description

signed lower left A Fragonard oil on canvas Eustache Le Sueur received a great deal of adulation in the 18th and 19th Century, when he became considered a kind of ``French Raphael.'' His early death and his association with the pious Carthusian order were romanticized, and a sort of sub-genre of Le Sueur pictures and drawings became popular (Ingres, Le Sueur réfugié chez les Chartreux [drawing, Musée Ingres, Montauban]; Désiré-François Laugée, Eustache Le Sueur chez les Chartreux [town hall, Saint-André-les-Vergers]; Jean Vignaud, La Mort de Le Sueur, Versailles).
