Alexandre Clarys studied under Ernest Blanc-Garin (1843-1916) at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. He specialized in animal painting, particularly horses and dogs, showing them working or in their natural habitat. Among his patrons was King Albert I, who commissioned the artist to paint his horse Montjoie. He also designed posters for horse racing and other sporting and agricultural events.
