Lot 15: ALEXANDER MUNRO

ALEXANDER MUNRO BRITISH 1825 - 1871 A RELIEF PORTRAIT OF AGNES GLADSTONE plaster diameter: 55cm., 21 5/8 in.

Alexander Munro created two relief portraits of the daughter of the Victorian Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone. One was an oval portrait in low relief, the other was a high relief with eleven stars of which the present model is a version. A version of the high relief was in the collection of Dr Henry Acland, present whereabouts unknown. Gladstone collected several sculptures by Munro, including his portrait of Josephine Butler another version of which is in the present collection.
