Alexander Mann and Arthur Melville were among the first 'Glasgow Boys' to head to Paris to study in the later 1870's, thus establishing a tradition which was followed by the Colourists and later major figures like Crosbie and Gear. This important work dates from the Glasgow Boys' most significant and pioneering period, the mid-1880's.
