Description

A Lady, seated in a deckchair, wearing white dress with lace trim and green ribbon bows, lace headdress decorated with violets, black ribbon necklace, gold bracelets and fur stole over her right shoulder, green curtain behind her, and a colonnade bearing title Sprudel in the background.
Pencil and watercolour on card, signed on the obverse and dated A. Clarot/ 1839, gilt-mounted velvet frame.
Rectangular, 242mm (9 1/2in) high

The title Sprudel on the colonnade in the background of the present lot, suggests that the present lot was painted at a Spa town, possibly that of Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad), Czech Republic, which has celebrated since the 14th Century for its alkaline thermal springs.
