Item Overview

Description

oil on copper A painting matching the description of the present work was described by Oretti (see Literature below) in the house of the Zagnoni family in the 18th century. There is a visible pentimento lower left, beside Saint Jerome's knees, where his red cardinal's hat has been partially painted out. The other saints may be identified by their symbols: Paul leans on his sword; Nicholas of Bari holds three golden balls in his hands; Barbara leans on the tower in which she was imprisoned; and the Infant Baptist is shown wearing animal skin and holding the reed cross.
