Description

This originally hand-colored copper engraving is from Innocente Alessandri & Pietro Scattaglia's Descrizione delgi Animali. The work was published in Venice by Carlo Palese between 1771 and 1775. The work is one of the most suberb Italian natural history books of the eighteenth century.

A pupil of the celebrated Italian engraver Francesco Bartolozzi, Innocente Alessandri was an accomplished Venetian engraver. He is best known for the numerous plates he produced in collaboration with his friend and colleague, the engraver Pietro Scataglia, for Descrizione delgi Animali, an important four-volume publication on quadrupeds that was initially published in monthly fascicles.
