Description

black chalk and grey wash

Dimensions

260 by 407mm

Artist or Maker

Provenance

Saam and Lily Nijstad, The Hague (Inv.nr. N402)

Notes

The attribution was kindly suggested by Robert-Jan te Rijdt. Brondgeest, a pupil of P.G. van Os, studied 17th-century Dutch drawings in the Amsterdam collections of his time. Judging from the style of the present lot, he must have been familiar with the famous series of castle drawings by Roelant Roghman. A signed view of Castle Doorwerth, very similar in style to this, was formerly in the Van Leeuwen Collection (sold, Amsterdam, Christie's, 10 November 1999, lot 41).
