A small carved wooden model of a fishing boat, the Zebra, with two figures and attached fishes. Stamped under the transom "Sam Smith, England" 9in(23cm)long.

The son of a steamship Captain, Sam Smith studied at Westminster College of Art as a painter, but began making wooden toys in the 1930s. After WW2 he resumed production and his quirky and attractive pieces acheived a cult following in Europe and America in the 1970s. His work is represented in the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Arts Council and Crafts Council collections, as well as in many local galleries.
