Amédé-Bretagne-Malo, last Duc de Duras, was premier gentilhomme de la chambre under King Louis XVI, and from 1795 onwards premier gentilhomme du Roi under Louis XVIII who styled him a Knight of the Order of the Holy Ghost in 1820. He was a close friend of Madame de Mirbel. The catalogue of the sale of her estate in 1849 (Notice des tableaux, Miniatures [...]) mentioned as lot 2 'M. le Duc de Duras miniature précieusement finie' which is probably the present portrait.
