PROVENANCE:
Sale, Sotheby's Tel Aviv, 7 October 1966, lot 119, illustrated

LITERATURE:
ISART: Israeli Artist's Yearbook (Tel Aviv 1975), illustrated p. 83

The embrace was carved circa 1950 and is a unique work, reflecting the influence of the distilled, simplified forms of Constantin Brancusi on Israeli art of the period. Aharon Priver was born in Poland in 1902 and studied in Vienna from 1921-22. He emigrated to Palestine in 1922 and was the founding member of the Ein-Harod and Tel-Yosef Kibbutzim. He was honored with a one man exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum in 1955 and in 1960 he won the Dizengoff Prize for sculpture with a comparable work to the present lot titled Girl's Head.
