Item Overview

Description

AGNES A. BROWN
(American, 1847-1932)
TABBY CAT
pastel on paper
signed in pencil, l.r.
10 1/2 x 12 1/4 in.

Provenance: Henrietta M. ("Rita") & Peter N. Heydon, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Other Notes: The Rita & Peter Heydon Collection of Cat Paintings represents the culmination of four decades of passionate collecting by two lovers of felines. The Heydons adopted their first cat, a barn stray named "Marmalade," shortly before they married in 1968. Over their 47 year marriage, they adopted nearly one hundred cats, giving each a distinctive food name (Capuccino, Meatloaf, Mushroom, and Gravy, to name a few). Furthermore, Rita dedicated much of her life to the adoption of stray, abandoned, or unwanted felines through the Heydon's private charity, The Mosaic Feline Refuge. In 27 years of operation, the Refuge found adoptive homes for more than 3,000 cats. In 1979, the Heydons purchased their first feline oil painting from The Graham Gallery in New York. Over four decades, they continued their collecting of delightful and whimsical cat paintings during their travels to New York, England, and France. Their genuine affection for these felines is evident in their heartfelt and personal collection, and Peter hopes that buyers recognize not only the charm of the felines depicted in these paintings but also the aesthetic energy and creativity that so many of the artists brought to their subjects.
