Notes

There are two known variations of this model: the present version and another with a younger man who is kneeling rather than standing. Both have been traditionally attributed to Campagna on account of his known works featuring figures in similar positions, kneeling and supporting objects. See for example the angels carrying cornucopia candlesticks now on the altar of the church of the Carmini in Venice. A 16th century bronze of this model, seemingly unfinished, is in the Capodimonte Museum, Naples, and another 16th century gilt bronze version from the collection of EmbdenPeel & Humphris, Ltd., London and J.J. Klejman, New York was sold at Sothebys New York, June 8, 2007, lot 438.
