Description

A moonlit river landscape with figures and a town beyond signed with monogram 'AV DN' (lower centre) oil on panel 19 1/8 x 28 in. (48.5 x 71.1 cm.) PROVENANCE Anon. Sale, Lepke, Berlin, 20 March 1900. De Berghe; sale Sainte-Gudule, Brussels, 7-8 June 1906. with the Terry-Engell Gallery, London, The Netherlands in Landscape - Exhibition of Fine Paintings of the 17th Century Dutch and Flemish Schools, 25 October-30 November 1961, when acquired by the father of the present vendor. LITERATURE Connoisseur, October 1961 (recorded in the files of the Witt library). NOTES We are grateful to Dr. Wolfgang Schulz, and to Mrs. Marijke de Kinkelder of the R.K.D., for independently confirming the attribution to Van der Neer on the basis of photographs. Dr. Schulz, who notes that the painting seems on the basis of a photograph to be 'an authentic work by Aert van der Neer with some weaknesses in the right half', will include the picture in his forthcoming monograph and catalogue raisonn‚ of the artist's works, to be published by Doornspijk this year, as no. 958.
