A frozen winter landscape with figures playing Kolf, a village nearby signed with double monogram 'AV DN' (lower left) oil on panel 81/2 x 93/4 in. (20 x 24 cm.) PROVENANCE Mme. Jules Ferry, Paris. with F. Kleinberger, Paris. Marcus Kappel, Berlin, by 1914; his sale, Cassirer and Helbing, Berlin, 25 November 1930, lot 12. Henry Rathenau, Switzerland and Katherine Ettlinger, London. LITERATURE W. von Bode, Die Gem„ldsammlung Marcus Kappel en Berlin, Berlin 1914, no. 18, illustrated. C. Hofstede de Groot, A Catalogue Raisonn‚, etc., London, 1923, VII, p. 440, no. 487. NOTES The present painting was previously in the collection of Marcus Kappel, who amassed an extraordinary group of Dutch and Flemish pictures including Rubens' Portrait of Isabella Brandt, now in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Rembrandt's Self-Portrait, signed and dated 1669, in the Mauritshuis, The Hague and the Coastal landscape by Simon de Vlieger, lot 50 in the present sale. An annotation to the Marcus Kappel 1930 sale catalogue in the Frick Art Reference Library suggests that only five of the paintings were sold at the auction, with the remainder, including the present work, possibly returned to the heirs.
