NOTE

Adriaen Carpentiers, originally from a Flemish family, settled in England in about 1739, travelling extensively in the provinces until he finally settled in London in about 1760. He exhibited at the Free Society, the Society of Artists and the Royal Academy, and mixed in particluar in a circle of foreign born artists, including Zuccarelli and Roubiliac, both of whose portraits he painted. This portrait may date from when he was working in Oxford.
