NOTE

The closely observed detail in this marine reflects Silo's extensive personal experience of the sea. He was a master shipbuilder and sea captain until the age of thirty. A fine draughtsman, he was appointed marine drawing master to the future Tsar Peter the Great in Amsterdam in 1697, and the latter would later own several of his paintings. Silo was also a prolific etcher and engraver of marine subjects.

A closely related version of this composition, of similar dimensions and also signed, was sold London, Christie's, 28 April 1972, lot 108.
