NORTHERN SCHOOLS

Dr Tilman Falk has confirmed the attribution to Adam Gutman on the basis of a photograph in a communication dated 3 May 2006. Dr Falk suggests that the present drawing was probably made for an album amicorum or stammbuch, a practice particularly popular in Germany in the middle of the 17th Century in which individuals or families collected illustrations and dedicated sheets from friends and important personalities. Today these albums are of great interest as historical documents, particularly for the biographical information they reveal on the artists since they record the author, addressee, date and location of the drawing. We are grateful for the kind assistance of Dr Falk and Dr Lorenz Selig in preparing this note.

No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
