Lot 298: ADAM ELSHEIMER (1578-1610) - Saint John the Baptist

Item Overview

Description

Oil on copper. This exquisite work, attributed to Adam Elsheimer (1578-1610), depicts Saint John the Baptist in a carefully crafted natural setting, characteristic of this artist's mastery in the use of small formats and metallic surfaces. Saint John, at the centre of the composition, appears seated under the shade of a robust tree, his figure surrounded by a mountainous landscape that stretches towards a luminous horizon. Dressed in a red cloak that contrasts with the warm tone of his skin, the saint holds a book and the staff with the cross, while the lamb at his feet, a symbol of the Agnus Dei, reinforces the identification with his role as a precursor of Christ.

The landscape is one of the main characters in the work, worked with meticulous detail and a color palette that balances green, blue and earthy tones. The trees, with their delicately defined branches, frame the main scene and connect the foreground with the background, where a meandering river, a bridge and an idealized city can be seen, elements that give the landscape depth and a serene atmosphere.

The oil on copper technique, usual in Elsheimer, allows for exceptional definition in the details and a luminosity that accentuates the contrast between the human figures and the natural environment. The artist's characteristic handling of light guides the eye to the face and hands of St. John, subtly illuminating the spiritual symbolism of the composition.

This work reflects the influence of Flemish painting on Elsheimer, combined with elements of the idealized Italian landscape, marking a point of transition towards the early Baroque. The artist's sensitivity to integrate the religious figure into a natural environment makes this representation of St. John the Baptist an intimate and contemplative piece, which transcends the simple devotional portrait to become a visual meditation on spirituality and harmony with divine creation. Measurements: 38 x 33 cm. With repainting.
