Description

An Italianate landscape with travellers and peasants on a mountain track, others praying in front of a chapel beyond signed and dated Teerlink/Roma1815 lower left oil on canvas 75.4 x 100.9 cm PROVENANCE Anon. Sale, Sotheby's, London, 18 October 1978, lot 23, ill. NOTES In 1807, Teerlink was one of the ‚lŠve pensionnaires of King Louis Napoleon who were sent to Paris and Rome, studying for a year and a half in Paris under Jaques Louis David before going to Rome where he arrived in December 1808. There he stayed for the rest of life, serving an international clientele. Together with Hendrick Voogd and Anthonie Sminck Pitloo, he belonged to the most succesful early 19th Century painters of Italianate landscapes (W. Loos, G. Jansen & W. Kloek, Voor en na Waterloo, 1997, p.74).
