"A very worthwhile and accessible history of the fight to save the Union on the home front. Opposition to the Civil War within the population of the North ran a spectrum of opinion, from those who thought the war not worth its cost in blood and treasure; to those who wanted to save the Union, but not with Abraham Lincoln's methods; to those whose advocacy of the South took them into the realm of outright treason. Milton is quick to document that most opposition took place within the confines of the existing political parties and by lawful process. However, some others banded together in secret societies such as the "Knights of the Golden Circle" and its successor, the "Order of American Knights," to plan the subversion of the war effort and, in conjunction with Confederate agents, instigate rebellion against the US government. President Lincoln took action to contain this fifth column. The US Secret Service, actually was invented for the purpose of suppression of these rebel groups during the Civil War. It was not entirely effective, as it took on too many auxiliary duties to be effective everywhere. Responsibility for tracking the fifth column fell primarily to state governors and district military commanders, who organized their own spy networks against the secret societies. The climax of Milton's narrative is the race to prevent, in the fall of 1864, first an uprising of the secret societies in the old Northwest, and then an attempt by Confederate agents to liberate Confederate prisoners from northern prison camps."
