Notes

John Mackie Junior was the son of the Physician, John Mackie (1748-1831) and his wife (née Sevegne), who was sketched by Jean Baptiste Ingres in Rome, 1816 (this portrait now in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London). The family resided in Southampton, where they were acquainted with the family of Jane Austen. John Mackie junior, went on to become a doctor of Divinity and Clergyman. He was also fellow of the Royal Society and of Christchurch College, Oxford.
