Captain William Allan Cox was the second son of John Cox and Mary Hore. First recorded in Ireland in 1630 the Cox family settled initially in Kilworth, Co. Cork and then later in Coolcliffe, Co. Wexford. On his maternal side the sitter was a descandant of the Earls of Courtown and the Earls of Bessborough.
