Item Overview

Description

Abe Nobuya (1913-1971): Song of Bones Oil on canvas; signed lower left N. Abe -50, reverse inscribed 'Song of Bones' Nobuya Abe 1950. Dimensions 25.75 x 35.75in (65.4 x 90.8 cm) Note: this lot and the next were given by the artist to the present owner during the early 1950's. The precise and intense surrealist style of these paintings is unique among works by Abe previously offered at auction in the United States. During his long career, Abe participated in many international exhibitions, including the Sao Paulo Biennale (1951), the Carnegie International Exhibition (1953), and The New Japanese Painting and Sculpture, held at the Museum of Modern Art and eight other American museums between 1965 and 1967. As a result of this exposure, his work was purchased during the 1960's by many prominent American collections for example, Mrs. John D. (Blanchette) Rockefeller owned his 1964 painting Gray Echo.
