Notes

Asongan is the archtypal street peddler who sells anything from cigarettes to candies and newspaper. Found at the busiest congregation of human and street traffic, Asongan stands alongside Tattoo Man II, a vividly observed ruffian with brawny body and arm heavily tattooed, cigarette dangling and folded arms ready to lay hands on those who upset the law of the street. In these figurative sculptures, Abdi Setiawan pays homage to the plebeian personalities of Yogyakarta where he lives and works and the life values they exhort.
