Description

A VIEW FROM LEMON HILL, FAIRMOUNT PARK " CANAL ROAD FROM PRATT ' S GATE " William Mason (active 1808-1844), dated " July 1827 " Unsigned, watercolor and pencil on paper, framed. 6 x 8 1/4 in. PROVENANCE: Note: William Mason was an engraver, painter and drawing teacher. A native of Connecticut, Mason moved to Philadelphia in 1810. Between 1830 and 1841 he exhibited several landscapes and still lifes at the Pennsylvania Academy of Arts and the Artist ' s Fund Society. A note on back of frame adds " William Mason taught in the Franklin Institute. He was also a member of the Geological Society of Pennsylvania and the " Art Union. " He illustrated books on conchology and ornithology. He was a contemporary of William Strickland, the Philadelphia architect and made engravings of some of Strickland ' s buildings.
