Charles Bell Birch studied at the Royal Academy schools and later in Berlin under the celebrated German sculptor, Christian Rauch (d. 1857). Returning to London, he became a pupil and then assistant of John Henry Foley (d. 1874). Bell was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy.
