The collection of sitters including Fontenelle, Montesquieu, Raynal, Racine, William Tell, Fénelon, D'Alembert, de la Bruyere, Benjamin Franklin, Descartes, Diderot, Bossuet, Malesherbes, Lavoisier, Lycurgue, la Fontaine, Condillac, Corneille, Comte de Buffon, Boileau-Despréaux, Moliere, Mably, Solon, and Linné are engraved in fine stipple engraving printed in colour and depicted bust length in an oval, each previously with a paper label pasted to the reverse inscribed 'a Paris, chez Marie-François Drouhin, Editeur rue de Vaugirard, no. 1348. enface du Jardin des Carmes', in later ebonised frames
