Item Overview

Description

The rectangular inverted breakfront grey-veined marble top with a reeded edge, above a pair of doors with brass trellis grilles, enclosing two adjustable concave-moulded shelves, between caryatid uprights, on reeded later amphora feet 37 in. (94 cm.) high; 511/4 in. (130 cm.) wide; 151/4 in. (38.5 cm.) deep NOTES This marble-topped and brass-enriched bookcase-commode, with its Egyptian hermed pilasters, is conceived in the French antique fashion popularised by Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Encyclopaedia, 1804-7. A related marble-topped 'Bookcase....with brass wire and blue silk curtains enriched with carved antique heads and ornaments finished as bronze' was supplied in 1806 for Weston Park, Staffordshire by the court cabinet-makers Messrs. Nicholas Morel and Robert Hughes of Great Marlborough Street (P. Rogers, 'The Remodelling of Weston Park', Furniture History, 1987, fig. 10).
