Notes

PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION (LOT 102)
Two similar panels, presumably originally en suite with this panel, depicting America and Asia were sold, Sotheby's, Milan, December 15, 1992, lot 326. The panel depicting Asia bears the following inscription: "L'ASIE Ou sont exactement décrites toutes les coutes de la mer suivant les derniers navigations, et le Dedans du pais, par Charles Gibertoni dédié a son Altesse Sere.me Madame Yolande Béatrice de Bavière Grande Princesse de Toscane". This refers to Violante Beatrix of Bavaria (1673-1731) who married Ferdinand de Medici, Grand Prince of Tuscany in 1689. Anna Maria Massinelli refers to the panel of Asia in Scagliola l'arte della pietra di luna, Rome, p. 20, and suggests that it is the pendant to the panel of Europe sold in this lot. She further states that the panel of Europe carries a dedication to "Gran Principe Ferdinando", although this is no longer legible.
