Description

A RARE FABERGÉ TWO-COLOUR ENAMEL, SILVER-GILT AND SEED PEARL TRIPTYCH CLOCK AND FRAME, WORKMASTER JOHAN VICTOR AARNE, ST PETERSBURG, 1899-1903 in neoclassical taste, enamelled in translucent mauve and apple green over sunburst and moiré engine-turned grounds within leaf-chased mounts, the central panel containing the timepiece, the white enamel dial within a seed pearl border and berried laurel divided by rosettes, the spandrels applied with anthemia and scrolls, the hinged side panels each with a pearl-framed aperture above foliate swags, ribbon-tied laurel surmount, the ends with fir cone finials, ivory back, scroll strut, struck with workmaster's initials and Fabergé in Cyrillic, 88 standard, scratched inventory number 10435 width overall: 21cm, 8 1/4 in.

Notes

This apple green enamel is considered to be Aarne's signature colour. Although rare, this model exists in other combinations of colours, also by Aarne. A red and white example sold, Sotheby's New York, Property from the Collection of Lily & Edmond J. Safra, 3 November 2005, lot 24; an un-gilt blue and white example sold, Sotheby's New York, 16 June 1988, lot 402; and an apple green and white triptych clock is illustrated, G. von Habsburg, Fabergé: Imperial Craftsman and His World, 2000, no. 692, p. 272.
