Description

American, Circa 1930 Worked in brown, gray and salmon, the six needlepoint square panels displaying the six great achievements in Franklin D. Roosevelt's life, starting from the upper left, the Groton School shield with dates 1896-1900, Harvard University and the dates 1900-1904, Columbia Law School and the dates 1904-1907, an anchor representing his years as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, 1913-1920, the seal of the State of New York, and the dates he served as Govenor 1929-1932 and the Presedential Seal with his first term of office 1933 Approximately 3ft. 8in. x 2ft. 8in. (112cm. x 81cm.) EXHIBITION Displayed in the Franklin D. Roosevelt Centennial, New York, 1982 NOTES This needlepoint rug was made by Mrs. Tracy Dows, the mother of Olin Dows, (see Lot 221). Mrs. Dows who lived in Rhinebeck, New York, was a friend and neighbor of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Her initials are worked into the lower right corner of the rug. It was displayed at 'Top Cottage' the hilltop retreat which Franklin D. Roosevelt built on his estate in Hyde Park in 1938. Roosevelt used 'Top Cottage' as a place to work and entertain guests, including Winston Churchill, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. 'Top Cottage' is now a National Historic Site and photographs there show the illustrious guests who visited.
