Item Overview

Description

Each stamped with a c couronné. height 9in (23cm)

Notes

These candlesticks are based on a design by Juste-Aurèle Meissonier (1695-1750) from 1728. Meissonier was one of the most influential proponents of the Rococo style. The original design shows two putti on each candlestick, an example of which is conserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1974.356.184., 185). The present model, with one putto on each, was apparently adapted relatively soon after Meissonier's design was published, and examples can be found in the Wallace Collection (with a "c couronné" mark from 1745-49), the Wrightsman Collection of the Metropolitan Museum, and the Jones Collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum. An English-fabricated pair from circa 1830 was sold at Christie's London, 10 December 2009, lot 503 (£4,750).
