Description

the rectangular mottled grey marble top with rounded corners, the frieze fitted with a drawer enclosing a green leather-lined writing surface and three small drawers, mounted at the front and side with a pierced ormolu border, the case with two long drawers inlaid sans traverse, outlined with chased ormolu borders and rosettes, raised on hipped cabriole legs; inlaid to form still-life motifs and flower-filled vases on the front and sides in various fruitwoods on grounds of sycamore; fitted with ormolu chutes, rosettes and sabots. PROPERTY FROM A CALIFORNIA ESTATE
An identical commode fitted with a secrétaire drawer in the frieze, formerly in the Wildenstein collection was sold from the Akram Ojjeh collection, Sotheby's, Monaco, June 25, 1979,lot 30. It is identically veneered on the front and sides and is fitted with identical ormolu mounts, it differs only in the color of the marble top. Another virtually identical example by Topino is illustrated, Le 18e Siècle Français, Hachette, 1956, p. 41, fig. C.
