Description

with a cartouche-shaped backrest carved with flowerheads and foliate motifs; the padded armrests on voluted supports, the serpentine-fronted seat raised on cabriole legs; upholstered à chassis . Louis-Charles Carpentier maître in 1752 Carpentier's workshop in the Rue de Cléry enjoyed considerable success and he had a distinguished clientèle including baron Rolin d'Ivry, the marquise de Brunoy, the ducesse de Villeroy and the duc d'Aumont. He supplied furniture for the prince de Condé's Palais Bourbon, also his residences at Chantilly and Vanves. In 1779 he sold his workshop and contents to Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené.

Notes

Three pairs of identical armchairs and a canapé from the collection of a Lady of title, was sold, Christie's, London, July 5, 2001, lots 16 - 19. Each was stamped L.C. Carpentier and may well have been the same suite as the present chair.
