Made out of natural gourd, the tall waisted splayed foot lacquered in gold and iroe-hiramakie with a border of stylised leaves, the outlines subtly rendered in tetsusabinuri, signed with gold lacquer seal Ryushin; with tomobako titled and signed by the artist Ryushin zo with seal. 14.7cm (5¾in) high. (2).

Umezawa Ryushin was the third son of Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891). He studied makie-e and painting under the tutelage of his father and under Ikeda Taishin (1825-1903). He obtained a silver prize at the Paris International Exposition in 1900 and at the Japan-British Exposition in 1910.
