By descent through the family of William Frederick Witherington and Frederick Richard Pickersgill

Pickersgill studied under his maternal uncle, William Frederick Witherington. It is difficult to be precise about the attribution of the various albums, but the small album bound in red calf, with studies of Egyptian, Roman and mediaeval figures is attributable to Pickersgill. The loose sketches of seated boys are very reminiscent of figures from Witherington's paintings.
