Anderson worked briefly as a scientific illustrator before turning to wildlife painting. In his own words, his interest lies in 'the impression the animal makes on me rather than on the reality, the reproduction of details, or the way other people might see him.' He used bold colors to capture fleeting moments in the wild with broadly impressionist brushwork. He was a member of the National Academy of Western Art.
