Cheng Guozhi was a mid-19th century potter well known for his carved porcelain.Five pieces bearing his seal mark were included in the Exhibition of Carved Porcelain and Other Carved Objects, The Fung Ping Shan Museum, University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 1978, cat.nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 58. Compare also a yellow glazed biscuit brushpot by Chen Guozhi, carved with figures in a landscape, in the Capital Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Shoudu Bowuguan zang ci xuan, Beijing, 1991, pl. 163; and a carved imitation bamboo porcelain brushpot in this sale Lot 8.
