Notes

We are grateful to Everett Fahy for proposing the attribution on the basis of a photograph. He suggests that the picture can be compared to similar panels by Michele di Matteo that form part of the large Polittico di Sant'Elena, in the Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice, which he completed at some point between 1428 and 1436, when he was living in the city. According to Miklós Boskovits (Gemaldegalerie Berlin: Katalog der Gemalde, 1988, pp. 137-140) the altarpiece contains forty-eight small format panels, with ten others in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. One was sold at Christie's, New York, 9 June 2010, lot 204.
