1470-1532) with the limp body of Christ being lifted by Joseph of Arimathea, Saint John the Evangelist and Nicodemus into a sarcophagus bearing the inscription QVEM TOTVS NON / CAP ORB IN HAC / TVMBA CLAVDIT, with an entourage of mourners and the Virgin fainting in the foreground supported by another female figure 4 3/4 in. by 6 7/16 in. Kress Collection, London, 1965, cat.no.207, fig. 101 Franco Panvini Rosati, Medaglie e Placchette italiane dal Rinascimento al XVIII secolo, Rome, 1968, cat.no.8, p.68 Three variations of this plaquette are known, the example shown here, another without the inscription and a third without two of the figures. No signed version of this plaquette exists but it relates closely to the reliefs on Riccio's Della Torre monument (at Verona) and he is unanimously accepted as being responsible for the composition. The inscription translates as follows :- He whom the whole world could not contain is enclosed within this tomb.
