19th c. Oil on Panel by Pierre Franc-Lamy aka Eugene Lamy (French, 1855 - 1919) "Chaumiere au bord d'un fleuve" - Thatched cottage at the edge of a river. Signed lower right. Purchased in Paris. In French carved gilt wood frame, measures 35"x27"x1 3/4". Weight Pierre Franc-Lamy aka Eugene Lamy was Born in Clermont-Ferrand on May 12 , 1855 and died in Paris on April 13, 1919. He attended the municipal art school of the 9th district while also attending the studio of the painter Isidore Pils, with his good friends Norbert Goeneutte and Frederic Samuel Cordey. He was accepted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, but in 1873, after the death of Isidore Pils, Lamy and his friends Goeneutte and Cordey apply to attend the studio of Jean-Leon Gerome and are refused acceptance. The trio abandons school and begin to paint full time. Lamy, Goeuntte, Frederic Samuel Cordey and Auguste Renoir form a group of inseparable friends, to which Marcellin Desboutin also joins. In Renoir's Bal du moulin de la Galette painted in 1876, Lamy can be seen wearing a straw boater sitting alongside Cordey and Georges River in the foreground of the canvas. In 1880, then annually from 1883, Lamy exhibited at the Salon organized by the Society of French Artists in Paris. He also exhibited in Paris at the pavilion of the arts during the Universal Exhibition of 1889 and during that of 1900. In November 1912, his collection of drawings and paintings centered on 19th century French is dispersed in a sale at the Hotel Drouot in Paris.
