Item Overview

Description

**Originally Listed At $1400**

Paul Sierra (Cuban, b. 1944), "Waterspout", oil on canvas, Signed P.S. on lower left. Ca. 1990. A dramatic painting of a waterspout - a funnel-shaped rotating body of water and spray formed when a whirlwind occurs over a body of water - created by Paul Sierra, now among the pre-eminent Hispanic contemporary artists - depicted in a vibrant palette of cerulean blue, sea green, deep plum, salmon pink, aqua, and golden chartreuse, with accents of black, white, bright red, and violet to enhance the drama. In Sierra's words, "My work is representational, dealing with man's place in Nature." This tornado-like rotating whirlwind captures the sublime power of Nature with a capital N. According to the Smithsonian American Art Museum biography of Sierra, "Although a longtime resident of the Windy City, Sierra's tropical palette is based on childhood memories of Cuba. His trademark vibrant colors provide what has been called a 'cultural corridor' between his turbulent Cuban heritage and his adopted country." Size: 40" W x 30.25" H (101.6 cm x 76.8 cm)

Born in Havana, Cuba, Paul Sierra moved to Chicago at the age of sixteen where he attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Sierra has had a very successful career with more than 60 solo exhibitions in the US. His work may be found in elite museum collections such as The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, The National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian, Washington D.C., The Snite Museum, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the Museo del Barrio, New York City, and many more.

Paul Sierra's "Flor Nocturna" sold for $3,000 on Live Auctioneers (Artists in Auction, NY, NY, December 5, 2009 - Lot 240) -

Even more exciting, Sierra's "Frank Duvanek Visits My Studio, 1989" hammered at Sotheby's New York for $14,000 ($16,100 including buyer's premium) - Sotheby's 30 May 1997, Lot 288, illustrated on p. 218 of catalogue -
