Item Overview

Description

1898 Abraham Lincoln Gorham Bronze Statuette by George Edwin Bissell

George Edwin Bissell (1839-1920) fought in the American Civil War and spent much of his post-war career sculpting famous participants with a particular fondness for Lincoln, his best known subject. Bissell's dignified style is in the neo-classical academic tradition, learned from over twenty years of study in Paris from the late 1860s. This full length portrait presents superbly as a desk or library ornament, with rich deep brown patina and finely sculpted detail, provided by the renowned Gorham Foundry of Providence, Rhode Island. Signed "Geo E. Bissell" and dated "COPYRIGHT 1898" with foundry mark "GORHAM CO/0378." Height 5.75".
