Item Overview

Description

1896 Anheuser-Busch "Custer's Last Fight" chromolithograph featuring Custer’s Last Fight, commissioned by Anheuser-Busch. Based on an original painting by Cassilly Adams in 1884. F. Otto Becker prepared it for chromolithograph. It was then used in advertising by Anheuser Busch. This is one of the earliest pieces of Breweriana advertising. The print reads across the bottom "Entered According to Act of Congress by Adolphus Busch, March 30th 1896 In the Office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington, D.C.", and "Custer's Last Fight. - The Original Painting has been Presented to the Seventh Regiment U.S. Cavalry - By Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association. St. Louis, MO”. Most importantly, it is marked The Milwaukee Litho Co on lower right corner of image. The bottom edge of the print states many prominent Native American Indian warriors, and Military leaders. The print shows an animated scene of the Battle of the Little Bighorn where General George Armstrong Custer and his men were killed by Lakota, Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians on June 26, 1876. The print shows the army being overtaken by the Indians with Custer in the center, a sword raised above his head and his pistol in hand. It is believed to be in its original frame featuring Anheuser-Busch St Louis center top front. The print measures 32 in x 42 in. (measured from back without removing from frame). Frame measures 38.5 in x 48.25 in x 1 in. Weighs approx. 25lbs. Has not been inspected out of frame and is under glass. Visible thru glass, light water stains along the bottom of the print. Light 1.5 in. crease in left margin center of print. Vertical backing board burns top right of image. Slight toning at edges where it meets the frame. Retains original excellent color. Print rests slightly buckling behind glass. Provenance from previous seller states “I inherited this masterpiece from my great-grandfather who owned a tavern on the north side of Milwaukee at the end of the 19th century. He was one of the recipients of Budweiser’s most effective sales promotions in history.” Also included in this lot is Son of the Morning Star book and an 1877 newspaper with article about Custers’ last battle. The newspaper is an original March 16, 1877 Marysville CA Daily Appeal newspaper with an account of Custer’s Last Stand by an Indian Chief. The Times’ publishes a long account of Custer’s last battle, given to General Sheridan by Red Horse, a sub-chief and councilman of the Minneconjons, which is substantially as follows: Article continues in newspaper. Newspaper has toning and tears on edges. The book is titled: Son of the Morning Star Custer and the Little Bighorn by Evan S. Connell. North Point Press, San Francisco 1984. Fourth printing. DJ not clipped. Book in excellent condition with no writing or damage. DJ in plastic protector sleeve. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email.
