Lot 356: 17th Century Italian School - Adoration of the Magi

Item Overview

Description

Oil on canvas. This depiction of The Adoration of the Magi, attributed to the 17th-century Italian School, combines narrative richness with a dynamic and detailed composition, typical characteristics of the Baroque. In the centre of the scene, the Virgin Mary, elegantly dressed in blue and white tones, holds the Child Jesus, who extends his hand in a gesture of blessing towards the Magi kneeling in an act of veneration. Their richly decorated clothing in warm shades of red and gold reinforces their royal status and their connection with the distant lands of the East. Behind them, the third magician, standing and carrying a chalice, completes the compositional triangle that guides the gaze towards the central figure of the Child.

The setting is a modest nativity scene, with architectural elements such as wooden beams and details that suggest the humility of the place, while the night sky is illuminated by the star of Bethlehem, whose ray directs attention to the newborn, symbolizing divine guidance. The shepherds and secondary figures, located on the right, provide dynamism and depth, in addition to reinforcing the communal and universal character of the event.

The colour palette combines warm and cool tones, creating a harmonious contrast between the main figures and their surroundings. The carefully distributed lighting emphasises the face of the Child Jesus, which radiates its own light, and highlights the details in the clothing and expressions of the figures. This use of light, together with the drama of the postures and gestures, reflects the influence of the Italian Baroque, with echoes of the style of artists such as Guercino and Carlo Maratta.

The work embodies the Baroque ideal of conveying emotions and spirituality through a rich and detailed visual narrative. The Adoration of the Magi is not only a religious scene, but also an example of how 17th-century painting celebrated the interaction between the divine and the earthly through the use of theatricality and technical virtuosity. Dimensions: 100 x 81 cm
