Item Overview

Description

1. WELTKRIEG
Four large-format paintings by Albin Tippmann (1871 - 1952)
Nocturnal scene from World War I showing German cavalry soldiers and teams of horses fleeing from artillery fire. Two-part painting oil on canvas (size of the frames circa 134 x 188 cm and circa 133 x 144 cm). In addition a two-part oil painting on canvas (size of the frames circa 160 x 124 cm and circa 159 x 158 cm) depicting the capture of the Turco flag by the Saxon infantry in the Battle of Sedan on 1 September 1870 signed and dated at the bottom right "Albin Tippmann 12" - referred to as the artist's main work in Thieme-Becker (vol. 33 p. 201). Each professionally fitted with a new stretcher and partially gilt moulded frame. The painted surfaces slightly damaged and restored.
After studying at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts the Saxon painter Albin Tippmann took up residence in the city on the Isar where the Stadtmuseum acquired several of his works. Impressive in their use of space and colour the highly decorative paintings are imbued with the dynamism of combat.
